Management By Objective

1.
Nature teaches us the lessons which are also true  for the humans. A simple shoe pole magnet which aligns the field can generate a stronger magnetic field.Similarly, When the Army marches together it can break the bridge because of the alignment of foot steps in one direction.

Learning- In any organization if the employees concentrate on their work, understand the individual responsibility and streamline their energy then it would help the organization to flourish.

2.
Management by objective is the new strategy adopted by the organizations.Goals and objective  settings for the employees in an example of the management by objective. The objective of an organization is achieved by the target setting of the employees.As the appraisal rating of the employees are dependent upon their performance, employees try to achieve the goal and eventually help the organization to grow.

Learning- The sustainable growth is the buzzword.The growth strategy which includes the employees and the employee is being adopted these days.

3.
A manager should have a different understanding of the problem and tackles it differently too. The reason of Leander paes and Mahesh Bhupati not playing together looks like the problem of different ego state and personal problems. But,a different understanding of this issue can be in terms of kind of match that they play.One player is comfortable paying with two types of games i.e single match and double match. But, the other player is only comfortable playing the double match.

I will keep you posted about different management lessons in the coming posts. Happy Reading!

Three Monks

The video tells us about the three monks and their problems in bringing water.

Plot- The story is about three monks who stop fetching water from the source by the introduction of other monks. One monk shoulders two buckets of water but two monks shoulder only one bucket of water.

Story- First monk lives a peaceful life on the top of the hill worshiping god. He had a daily task of bringing two buckets of the water up the hill. When the second monk also joins along with the first monk the water load is shared between them. After some time a third monk joins the other two. They try to pass the buck on each other and in the process remain thirsty all night. One night a rat arrives and knocks down the candle holder. This puts the building on fire. This incident unites the monks together and they fetch water together. They learn a lesson of unity and temple never runs out of water.

Management Lessons-
1. Any simple example can be a source of lesson. The story tells us about the demerits of the flat organization. When there is no manager in the organization and workers are given the responsibility then mismanagement occurs.The video tells us the clear advantage of  the Hierarchical Structure over the Flat Structure of the organization.

Example from my own experience:-

 I have seen the problems because of flat structure in my own team at my previous company. I was working in a team of four members and my manager was staying in a foreign country as he needed to face the clients. All three members which were working offshore were of equal designation. We were not productive initially and often wanted to pass the responsibility on others.This affected the quality of the deliverable and client started complaining about the same. As this matter was escalated to a high level, my manager intervened and assigned responsibility to the individuals.

2. However, the video also tells us about the productivity by working in group.

            When a monk brings TWO buckets of water .
Input = 2 Units.
Output = 2 Units.
Therefore, productivity = 2/2 = 1 Unit.
When two monks carry only ONE bucket of water by using a single pole
Input=1 unit
Output = 0.5 Unit.
            Therefore, productivity = 1/0.5 = 2 Units.

Solution-
1.  The solution to the problem would be team work with responsibility.
2. Also, a structured organization would not have a problem of mismanagement with increased cooperation and would spur the growth of individual.
3. All the employees of the organization shall be delegated with assigned tasks such that they understand the responsibility of their own.
4. Employees shall also be given training on the situation handling and HRs should intervene when they see any loopholes in the process.

It would definitely bring other management lessons for you in the next post. Happy Reading!!

World is changing...So the management

Blindness is not always a misery. It gives the ability to concentrate.

Modern management is focused more towards hiring the blind folded people which do not interfere in decision-making process of the company. It is also observed that management prefers group of people to perform a task rather than an individual. The reason of this change lies in the difference in the performance of the two.

A single person building the tower of the blocks.

                                          A blind folded person building tower with assistance.

Viz-a-viz comparison between the old and modern management-
It is observed that employees which are not involved in the decision making process are more efficient in the work that they do. It reduces the work pressure upon them and dependency upon the employees reduces to certain extent.

Example:-
Project in any IT organization are of two types
 1. Fixed Billing project  2. Time and Money Project

Fixed billing project is of a kind in which billing is fixed and number of employees are decided by the organization. I have seen employees working upon three projects simultaneously in fixed billing project. It helps the companies to get more work done by employees in a less price. Addition to it employees have an advantage of knowledge that they gain out of working upon different projects .

Drawbacks:-

Thought there are certain drawbacks with the modern management.It reduces the skill set of the employees by not giving them an opportunity to take full responsibility of the work. This might lead to non satisfaction at the later stage.

Solution :-

This kind of situation can be avoided by the managers by appreciation and awards.Employee friendly HR policies would also be very helpful in this regard.

With this note the second management lesson ends. I would appreciate your comments.Stay tuned for more management lessons!
