Three Monks

The video tells us about the three monks and their problems in bringing water.

Plot- The story is about three monks who stop fetching water from the source by the introduction of other monks. One monk shoulders two buckets of water but two monks shoulder only one bucket of water.

Story- First monk lives a peaceful life on the top of the hill worshiping god. He had a daily task of bringing two buckets of the water up the hill. When the second monk also joins along with the first monk the water load is shared between them. After some time a third monk joins the other two. They try to pass the buck on each other and in the process remain thirsty all night. One night a rat arrives and knocks down the candle holder. This puts the building on fire. This incident unites the monks together and they fetch water together. They learn a lesson of unity and temple never runs out of water.

Management Lessons-
1. Any simple example can be a source of lesson. The story tells us about the demerits of the flat organization. When there is no manager in the organization and workers are given the responsibility then mismanagement occurs.The video tells us the clear advantage of  the Hierarchical Structure over the Flat Structure of the organization.

Example from my own experience:-

 I have seen the problems because of flat structure in my own team at my previous company. I was working in a team of four members and my manager was staying in a foreign country as he needed to face the clients. All three members which were working offshore were of equal designation. We were not productive initially and often wanted to pass the responsibility on others.This affected the quality of the deliverable and client started complaining about the same. As this matter was escalated to a high level, my manager intervened and assigned responsibility to the individuals.

2. However, the video also tells us about the productivity by working in group.

            When a monk brings TWO buckets of water .
Input = 2 Units.
Output = 2 Units.
Therefore, productivity = 2/2 = 1 Unit.
When two monks carry only ONE bucket of water by using a single pole
Input=1 unit
Output = 0.5 Unit.
            Therefore, productivity = 1/0.5 = 2 Units.

Solution-
1.  The solution to the problem would be team work with responsibility.
2. Also, a structured organization would not have a problem of mismanagement with increased cooperation and would spur the growth of individual.
3. All the employees of the organization shall be delegated with assigned tasks such that they understand the responsibility of their own.
4. Employees shall also be given training on the situation handling and HRs should intervene when they see any loopholes in the process.

It would definitely bring other management lessons for you in the next post. Happy Reading!!
